After much deliberation and approval from the Stake Leadership starting this Thursday was are tweaking the overtime procedures.
1) Each overtime period will start with possession going to the team with the alternating possession arrow, carried over from the regulation time. (administered like half time)
2) For the tournament the second overtime will no longer be sudden death, we will continue to have a series of 2 minute overtimes, with possession going to the team with the alternating possession arrow. There will be 30 seconds between periods, Each team gets only one time out (two 30 sec.) per period until a team wins. Bonus, and fouls carry over and each team will continue shooting at the same basket as the second half.
For an explanation for the rational for the change I am forwarding the message we sent to Mike Hornung who is the Stake high councilman supervising Sports.
Hi Mike,
I know this is unusual timing but Nate , Scott and I and kind of Becky want to tweak the over time procedures.
High school procedures have 4 minute over times, with a jump ball starting each period. To save time, we changed it years ago to have a 2 minute overtime starting with a jump ball, than if necessary a second overtime starting with a jump ball, and sudden death, first point wins. That works fine except in cases like a game we played last year, double overtime we got the ball and our guy was fouled, it was a questionable call (of course the ref was right as always) now we get two no pressure (even if we miss both it is still a tie game) uncontested free throws for the win. We won but both teams felt cheated, after a great game, it was a cheap way to win.
The problem with the jump ball is that a team with a tall center usually gets control of the jump so that team would start the game and both overtime periods with possession, so the short team may never get possession in the entire overtime or could possibly have 3 fewer possessions than the other team, Two in the truncated overtime.
So we propose and want your approval for the alternating possession to carry over to overtime, rather than a jump ball, just treat it like half time with the team with the arrow getting the ball , a second overtime if necessary would go to the other team, (assuming there were no jump balls during the first overtime period) thus both teams have an equal number of possessions plus or minus one.
Second just for the tournament we eliminate the sudden death overtime, we just have a series of two minute overtimes, starting with alternating possession until one team wins, this might add a few minutes to our night but in the tournament where a team is eliminated it just seems fairer, we want to start these rules next Thursday.
What do you think.

Gary,
That is absolutely the right way to handle it. Thanks for the explanation. Implement as soon as you would like.
Nice comment about the ref, ha ha.
