Way way back when we still had church softball leagues , we proposed a rule to eliminate running over the catcher, sadly it was outvoted by a group of macho Pete Rose type coaches.
Recently that rule was adopted by major. League Baseball.
Several years ago to speed up the basketball games we went from 4 quarters to two halves, a while later Minnesota high school switched from quarters to halves.
Last month we eliminated the jump ball to begin over time periods.
Anyone watching the watching the Hopkins/ Shokopee state semifinal saw a game that would have benefited from the rule. Hopkins knowing it was taller and would win the jump balls literally held the ball for the last 3 minutes of the game and took a final shot, the first and second overtime, after winning the jump held the ball for the whole overtime period and took a last second shot, in the third overtime they win the jump and. Held it the whole time and didn't even get a shot off.
So summing it up, for the last three minutes of the game and three overtime periods Shokopee didn't even have a single possession. In the forth overtime period a turn over helped the teams exchange baskets than Hopkins hit a miracle 80 footer at the buzzer to win and get a spot on sports center.
Dah dah dahhhhh dah dah dahhhhh
Watch I predict the national high school federation will change the rule to either a shot clock or eliminate the jump ball to start overtimes? like us. We shall see.
