I only have a quick minute, but thank you everyone who participated in the great tournament, there were many many great match's. Many going to third games. With Maple Grove winning out.
It looked like everyone had a great time, there was great sportsmanship, it was a joy to be part of it.
Remember the Basketball meeting at Anoka stake center Thursday January 15, 7:00 get your coach's and teams together.
Have a Merry Christmas, and Happy New Years!!!!

2014 SAMS LDS men's Volleyball tournament (continued)
Here is the remaining schedule for the tournament, rewritten to be easier to follow.
NOTE NSP/Blaine 1 play at 6:30, all games at the Anoka stake center.
There have been some disputes about rules, here are some clearificatioins:
1) When the ball is approaching the top of the net, players from the recieving team may not touch the ball unless:
a) Part of the ball has crossed the plain of the net extended.
b) The attacking team has used all 3 hits.
c) The attacking team is attempting to hit the ball over the net.
2) On a serve, the receiving team may not return the ball unless it has dropped below the plain of the top of the net.
3) Except for the server, all players must be totally in bounds when the ball is served.
Good luck!

basketball 2015 update
Just a reminder coaches and teams need to be determined by Jan 15th because of building availability the basketball meeting will be the third Thursday in January, 15 January. 2015, at the Anoka stake center, remember young men will play games on Thursday nights and Sat. Mornings so those preferences should be given by then. we will do all we can to occomodate them.
Men will still play all their games Thursday nights starting Jan 22nd.
Merry Christmas!!!

Hi Bracketologists
Hi you hard core bracket study people, I am sure you are wondering why several games for the second Thursday, have two potential start times.
The explanation is that we are following the mandate to have the tournament teams from the bottom of the standings play each other first, so they have a couple competitive match's. I can see that, So the top teams get byes. That coupled with the fact that we have an uneven number of teams creates a situation, which is game #11 NSP vs winner of game #6 so NSP with no loses and winner of 6 with one loss.If things go as expected and NSP (tied for first in the league) wins the other team is eliminated and the tournament goes as planned, however should the winner of game 6 win than we have two one loss teams creating all sorts of havoc. Thus the contingency start times.
I am glad I will not be refereeing game 11 since as one of the athletic directors and tournament directors we are neutral, but for this one game for the sake of start times I hope NSP has a good match. :-)
g
P.S. Oh dear, what if we are the "other team!!!?"
good luck to everyone, especially NSP game 11 (only) :-)

Volleyball tournament update
Hi all, well it is finally here, after Thanks Giving Wekend we can all waddle onto the court for the tournament
Eligability rules:
1). Any baptized member of your ward can play, he does not have to have played during the season.
2) Female players have the same requirements as the males.
3) Non members and Free Agent members (Baptised members who's ward does not have a team) must have played at least once during the regular season. Where they live does not matter.
4) Students from your Ward and returned Missionaries are eligible to play.
Tournament rules:
1) Because the Anoka building is not available and the Minneapolis building has things hanging over the court we have chosen to play all the first round games at the St. Paul Stake Center, so we will be playing a lot of ball, should we get way behind and a match goes to a third game we might shorten the game to first to 15, otherwise the match's are 2 of 3 first to 25, win by 2 or first to 30.
2) The games will be self officiated, like the regular season, unless refs. Are dreamed necessary .
3) Have your teams arive early, so we can start early if the previous match finished early. We are scheduled to play until almost 11 P.M. As it is
Good luck

Week 10 11/20/2014 schedule (season final)
Week 10 schedule 11/20/2014
Final week, seeding for the tournament is being set up, First place NSP (14-4) Needs one win to take the top spot, Blaine, (12-6) has an outside chance to tie them, as they play the last match of the season. Second place Shore View (13-5) finishes with matchs against the fast improving Shingle Creek, and Injury prone, who knows which team is going to show up, Maple Grove, there is a real chance there could be a 3 way tie for first.
Good luck, remember after next Thursday, we have the following Thursday off for Thanks Giving, than we have two weeks of the tournament, Dec. 4 and 11. all games on Thursdays.

. Besides the great story of the underdog which hasn't been to the World Series since 1985' Jeremy Guthrey the starting pitcher for game 7, is a very faithful outspoken member of the church. He is a returned missionary.

Week 6 update
With the season half over the league is shaping up to be one of the most balanced in years.
After Medicine lake swept both men's basketball and volleyball championships last year some on the competition committee suggested new rules to help balance the league like allowing only 2 Peniata's on the court at a time, that suggestion was quickly squashed by the higher up powers that be.
However major developments occurred, Brian Peniata moved to the Elm Creek Ward Upgrading their team greatly and downgrading Medicine Lake. Sadly for Elm Creek which has been on the verge of the final 4 several years in a row, one of their best players, Mike Gray recently moved to San Diego California, I am sure if he knew Brian was going to move into their ward he would have stayed. (or not)
But before you feel to sorry for Medicine Lake they recently had a member move into their ward, Mark, who is about 6'6" and played varsity college volleyball out west somewhere. (the rich get richer).
A look at the standings and you see Defending champion and winner of 3 of the last 4, Medicine Lake , is 3-7, don't let that fool you one Peniata is in school Thursday nights, and another coaches volleyball Thursday nights, You can be sure that they will be there for the tournament.
Elm Creek has surged to the top of the standings, they are very well balanced and formidable.
Shore View is also very well balanced this year. with a couple elite players in Matt Gray and Ricky who is tall and fantastic.
Maple Grove was doing well scraping together a team until their star, Dan Wait who is a carpenter had a board fall on his head from 15 feet resulting in a mild concussion and 10 staples, fortunately he only be out only a couple of weeks.
Dark horses include Blaine who could be very good again depending on who is home for Thanksgiving and the tournament. At 7-3 NSP is also right there and depending on how many Zoellingers show up could be very strong.
Best of all everyone seems to be having fun.

Week 6 Schedule revised (again)
The number one rule in Church sports is "stay Flexible".
That applies 's today, after much negotiation the Shingle Creek and Lake Nokomis teams have come to terms and agreed to combine for the rest of the season. Thus creating another potential powerhouse in the league.
The schedule has been updated for tonight and next week, the rest of the schedule should be updated by the end of this weekend, all teams still play at the same location so sorry for any confusion and thanks for remaining flexible.

volleyball scheduling grid
For the hard core Volleyball schedule geeks, here is the volleyball grid used to create the schedule, to use it look at the left column find the team name go across and see where you intersect the teams on the top row, the numbers where they intersect represent the week numbers the teams play, everyone plays everyone at least twice, for the most part, we tried to have teams not play back to back weeks, that wasn't always possible.
