Womens participation clearified

It has come to my attention that the policy of allowing women  to join the men's league Thursday night  has replaced Women's volleyball Sat. Morning,  this is NOT the case.
The policy  to allow women to join the men was  to make it easier for the men's teams to  have enough players. Now this is not  coed  volleyball it is women playing Men's volleyball, (Like Wednesday night practices)  Men's net height, play the back wall, power volleyball. It is not for all women, especially 7 month pregnant novice players.
There is a fear by some that all the elite women  players would abandon the women's league and join the men.  I hope that those who do play for the men on Thursday also play Sat. Morning with their women's  teams.  Thanks

       Decisions  made at the meeting
1)  Because of other  interests  there does  not  appear to be enough interest for  young men/young women's  volleyball this year.  We even kicked around the idea of having coed but that  didn't  seem to work either.  Let me know if  that changes.

    Refresher on   SAMS  league  rules:
1)   You only need 2 players  to have an official game (not forfeit).

2)    A  team with two forfeits is out of the tournament.

3)   A  team  can show up with as few as one player,  recruit  players from other teams,  thus it is an automatic loss but not a forfeit.

4)   There must  be at least an equal number of Baptized members as non-members.

5)  Members from wards which do not have teams are free to play  for another team, as one of their members.

6)   A  sibling  or someone living in the household as a Baptized member is counted as a member  for  sports purposes.

7)  This is new,  Females  may play on the men's  teams.   This is not coed  volleyball it is women playing
men's volleyball.   (similar  to Wed. Night practice)  Their status is the same  as men,  Female Baptized members count as  members   and Non-members as non-members. Women  may play in the tournament.

8)   You may touch  the net, except the top of the net, or  if touching the net interferes with  the opponents chance to play the ball.

9)   Match's  are played to 25, win by  two or the first team to 30.  Two out of three  sets  to win the match.

10) The  team receiving to start a  set,  must rotate  before they serve.

Good luck

Golf tournament summary

Hi all,
The Golf tournament went very well although it was not well attended,  not sure if it coincided with the state fair, the treat of rain, or whatever it was. We will have to pick a better date next year, there were several players there for the first time and every one seemed to have a ball. The course was very challenging and fun, with dear, and wild turkeys showing up here and there, sadly our group, the last 4 some of our group got behind. Some of the slowest walkers I have ever seen, it took 3 and a half hours to play the front 9 behind them, so we finished an hour behind the other players. So many of the players had already left before the one last contest for a valuable prize, the one putt only contest won by Singles ward Bishop Bob Haskins ,  he won a nice tee shirt that says "Jesus loves you, but I am his favorite"
     Take care.

SAMS LDS NTH Annual Golf tournament, NEW rules!

Hi all,  one week to go, BIG BIG NEWS,  after much negotiation with the general competition committee we got permission  to do an experimental tweaking of the rules for the tournament.  Since it is  a church tournament and we want it to be different and give more players a better chance to succeed and have fun, we are introducing "go for it golf" which means NO PENALTIES!
So what that means is if your tee shot goes out of bounds, rather than taking a penalty and refitting shot 3, you just go to the spot it went out of bounds take a drop and  hit your second shot. If you are 175 away from the water and are trying to decide if you should lay up... Go for it, if it goes in the water, go to yep the point it went in the water take a drop and hit your next shot, no penalties, I have a son in law who will save 45 strokes with this rule change, (he will still shoot a 250 but that is another story), this rule will also speed up the round. On this course there are a lot of blind shots over and around things so it is easy to lose your ball even if it is in play somewhere.  So look for a minute or two and take a drop at your best guess,( and not always two feet from the hole) this should be a riot, tell your friends, and see you Next Saturday

Got me...April Fools

The previous article about Jabari Parker was a hoax.

I think this makes two LDS in the NBA

NBA strikes deal with LDS Church for Jabari Parker

Jabari Parker
Today the NBA announced a landmark agreement with the LDS Church to ensure that Jabari Parker’s desire to serve a mission does not interfere with his draft prospects, saying the church has agreed to their proposal to call Parker to serve as a missionary in the city of the NBA team that drafts him.  While the official statement is brief, sources close to the negotiations report that because the NBA considers Parker to be a certain star, league officials, including new commissioner Adam Silver, went to unprecedented lengths to ensure that Parker enters this year’s draft.
The deal stipulates that Elder Parker will proselyte and live with missionary companions, like other volunteer Mormon missionares, except that, since Elder Parker will be an NBA player, he and his companion will attend all of the team’s practices and games.  The NBA has even given permission for Elder Parker’s companion to sit on the team bench in missionary attire during games to comply with mission rules, and has guaranteed that the companion will be shown at least twice during every televised game.  The league also made other concessions to secure the church’s cooperation, including donating a box suite for the local mission to use for entertaining investigators.
Joe Dumars, President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons, is excited about the proposal, saying it raises Parker’s draft prospects even higher, “There’s not a GM in the league who wouldn’t like having two clean-cut Mormon missionaries traveling with their team to reduce late-night carousing, and motivating the team in the locker room with heartfelt prayers.  Can you imagine how long me, Isaiah, Laimbeer and Rodman could have stayed at the top if we’d been surrounded by that kind of spiritual stature?”
Church spokeswoman LaDawn McConkie says the church expects Parker’s mission president will be flooded with requests from missionaries asking to be Parker’s companion, but it’s all part of a president’s demanding job.  According to ESPN, the mission presidents in the cities with teams most likely to win the draft lottery are already making plans.  Keith Harris, president of the church’s Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission, told ESPN’s Ric Bucher that he’s asked his missionaries to fast this Sunday to ensure Parker becomes a Milwaukee Buck.  “Ever since the Bucks started setting NBA loss records I had a feeling their abysmal season was all part of a higher purpose, so with this announcement I’m not about to sit back and watch the missions in Orlando or Philadelphia win Parker because we’re not worthy.”
Denver Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke praised Silver’s foresight, “The commissioner really pulled out all the stops.  Just announcing the NBA Free Book of Mormon Night is certain to cement fan loyalty. Our season ticket holders love basketball, beer, and half-time entertainment, but when they hear they’ll get a free Book of Mormon, too?  We’re already discussing internally what to do with all the extra money.”

Tri-Stake Golf tournament, Aug. 23, 3:00

Hi all, hope you are having a nice spring/summer.
It is official we booked Theore Wirth Golf course for the Tri-stake golf tournament.
Aug. 23, 2014, 3:00, afternoon discount rates.

$19.00 to walk, $34 with a half cart.

We want to find out and will have valuable prizes for:
Who is the best.
Who is the worse. (Highly coveted)
Who can lose the most golf balls.

The committee decided to change locations to something more centerly located.
If you have never played Wirth, it is an old school, fun challenging course, in a wooded location with a spectacular view of  downtown Minneapolis.
You play over water, trees, up and down hills, and in my opinion the 18th hole par 3, 130 yard putting green is one of the toughest  I have ever played.

Spread the word, they do want a head count so email me at
Anokastakeathletics@gmail.com
Or text Gary Campion at 612-202-6393

2014 SAMS LDS Men's basketball champions, Medicine Lake, final update

5th seeded Medicine Lake snuck up on everyone, trailing defending champion Maple Grove by 8  they  rallied with 3 point shooting and  fearless  drives to the rim. They won 56-50.
Lake Nokomis  rallied  after trailing Shingle Creek by 10   to win  by  10.
IN the Championship game Lake Nokomis dominated early, leading by as many at 16  by half time.
Medicine Lake came out firing, hitting  three pointer after 3  pointer,  their swarming defense  forced  several  turnovers.    They rallied  to  win by 12.
Congrats to Medicine Lake, this is the first time in SAMS   history that a men's team has held  both the volleyball and  Basketball  titles  at the same time.  Way to go.
Well enjoy the summer,   Remember  Volleyball meeting is Sept 11, 7:00 at the Anoka stake center.
Keep your eye on the Blog,   the Tri-stake Golf tournament is  tentatively  set for Sat. Aug 16, Possibly at  Theodor   Wirth   golf course,  (looking for something a little more  centrally  located.)

2014 SAMS LDS young men's basketball champions, Minnetonka

YM champions Minnetonka, Mens Final four brackets

Congratulations to  the 2014  SAMS  LDS  Young Men's  champions
Minnetonka     They finished with the top  seed   and beat the second  seed  Andover   team,  tied at half time  they pulled away and won  55-35.

For the Men:
The tournament is preceding  as  expected  with  all the top  seeds advancing to the final 4  except  a minor upset, number 5  Medicine Lake  beat   4th seeded  Twin Cities 1 (Spanish)  to Advance.
The closest game  was  Shingle Creek edging Cedar Lake by 3.
This sets up  the semi final matches  with  Top seed and defending champion Maple Grove playing upstart  Medicine Lake ( trying to sweep volleyball and Basketball in the same season)  at 7:00.
Following at  8:00  will be a  rematch of second seed  Shingle Creek and  third seed  Lake Nokomis,  Shingle Creek won  earlier by one point!
The Championship game will be between the winners at 9:30,   all  games will be at the Minneapolis (Crystal)  building.
   Good luck to all.
The committee  is  torn.  Maple Grove  has the best record and is the defending champions  but they have  won  several games by less than a basket.
Word has it the  Shingle Creek may be missing some players.
For the third year in a row  the  committee  gives the edge to Lake Nokomis.
Good luck to all

post hits

For those of you scoring at home, on Jan 28, this blog totaled  10,052  hits
today April 19,  it stands  at  17,018!
g
P.S.  It does not count my hits or it would be well over  20,000! :-)

Good Luck with that Zach!

With the young men's  basketball league,  ages range from 12  to 19  and can pose interesting Match ups.
In the picture is one of the more dramatic match up challenges.  Zach from the Shingle Creek ward  turned 12 last week, this was  his first young men's game ever, he is guarding Brandon Lingen, who is 6'5" and will play tight end for the Gophers  next year.  Just a note, Zach hit his first two 3-point attempts and finished with 8 points all in the second half!
(sorry for the poor photo quality, Zach really does have a hand  trying to block the shot)
