we were asked to either cancel our volleyball/futsal games so they can set up for their Halloween party, I said the players would be happy to set up tables and chairs afterwords, I appreciate your help

 I truly left feeling inspired, and uplifted,
It is based on a true story and is about family, faith and football, and demonstrated how Jesus  united a racially divided community.

YM indoor soccer name change FUTSAL!

For convenience  and to delineate our sport from "soccer"  we will now  call  our sport "Futsal".
 I actually  first heard of it from someone from Portugal who has moved to Salt Lake City and somehow  stumbled across our  SAMS LDS   sports blog, and he asked if we played  "Futsal".

Futsal (Portuguese pronunciation: [futˈsal]) is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller field and mainly played indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football.^[1] Its name comes from the Portuguese Futebol de salão , which can be translated as "room football". It was developed in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s.
In Brazil, futsal is played by more people than football but does not attract as many spectators as the outdoor sport. Several futsal players have moved on to careers as successful professional football players.^[2]
Futsal is a game played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football due to the surface of the field.^[3] The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.<sup>[4]


  Tell me  does  this not sound more like what we are playing than "soccer"? 
So  from now on lets call our sport  Futsal.</sup>

Week One update

   Well  the historic first week of YM indoor soccer is now history, the official  first game was a forfeit :-) One ward only had one YM  show up plus their coach so the YM  went home and did homework.
  The second  game was a big success.  Shingle Creek vs  Maple Grove,  Maple Grove had 6 players and a coach,  Shingle Creek had  3 players and a coach, but let me add a "ringer" coach  Juan from Guatemala. 
   The  First goal was scored by  Sam Rose  a  nonmember  friend of the Oldroyds.
 Shingle Creek won 3-0,  but everyone had fun, good exercise and fellowship.
  Like every season it takes a  while to get rolling, try as we might there are wards who say  "this is the first I heard about it."  This week should tell the story, now that players and coach's  can  go  to the quorum meetings and tell others  that there really is an indoor soccer league.

SAMS LDS indoor soccer rules

    Welcome to SAMS LDS  Young men's  indoor soccer. 
(This post is permanently posted  on the tab  on top of the blog under "Referee assignments and  Rules")



Indoor soccer  administration:
   Where as we have been playing Volleyball and Basketball for decades and rules have been tweaked  to what we have not, Soccer is brand new, We will adjust the rules to fit our needs, so be patient and flexible.

*    We will play two 20 minute  halves  running clock  except for the last Minute of the game, the clock will stop during dead ball times  after a  score  or if the ball goes out of play.

*If the game ends in a tie, it is a tie,   half win half loss...  We will play over time in the tournament.

*  If  the goalie  stops a goal by using his hand,  there will be a free  kick no  goalie  by the player who took the shot from half court.

 *  Each team has maximum of 5 players on the court at a time including the goalie.

*  At this point high school players can play but  only baptized members and  only one on the court at  a  time (similar to basketball)  Adult coaches may play but they cannot score. Girls are allowed to play.

*Substitutes:  You can substitute "on the fly"  but the subbing players  can't enter play until they physically touch hands with the player they  are subbing for.

*  You can have up to 2  non members on the court per team at a time.

*  Siblings of members  and those living in the same household as a  member are counted as "members"  for sports purposes.

* Two forfeits and your team is out of the tournament.

* Like  basketball and volleyball,  we hate forfeits,  you can  make a  team out of ineligible players  and  play but it is an automatic loss,  not a forfeit.    If your team has 2  players and the other team has 8 Split up, it is an automatic win for the team with 8, play and have fun.

*  You can play  with as few as 3 players.

*  Each team has  one time out per half.

* Referees,   We will play self officiated games,  call your own fouls,  we  will try to have  a stake person there  to supervise and  make sportsmanship calls,  and we will have some  soccer guys there for a while to help us  get rolling.


*** Like football  there is touch and tackle,  this is touch  soccer,   it is said  "soccer is a gentleman's game played  by hooligans"   Not here this is a gentleman's  game played by gentlemen,  players who play too rough,  will  not be tolerated.  This doesn't mean you can't be competitive,  play as hard as you want but no checking,  foul language,  threatening words  or gestures.    We are here  for  good  fun, sportsmanship and competition.






INDOOR SOCCER – LDS CHURCH BUILDING CULTURAL HALL RULES
(Nels  Berge and  a group of guys have been playing indoor soccer at the St. Paul Stake Center  Tuesday nights  for the last 7  years  we have  taped into their experience  for  rules and  appreciate  their help)
Here are the basic rules for playing indoor soccer in the cultural hall of an LDS church building.
The Court
Indoor soccer uses the entire cultural hall. All doors should be shut. The rigid accordion divider curtains should be all the way open and secured using straps. The curtain for the stage (platform) should be closed. The basketball backboards should be raised. All tables and chairs should be put away and the floor swept, if possible. There are no out of bounds. The ball is played off the walls and ceiling.
Teams and Players
Teams can have as many players as they want, however, the maximum number of players on the court from a team is five. The other players sit out and substitute in to the match as needed or desired. The minimum number of players on the court from a team is four. In other words, a team can never have more than five, or less than four, players on the court at any given time. Teams are never allowed to have only three players. For pick-up matches, when there are fifteen or more players, players should divide in to three teams and play five-minute matches.
Teams are identified by shirt color. There are no “shirts and skins”. All players must bring a white shirt, dark shirt (black, blue, green, dark gray, brown, etc.), and red shirt.
Scoring
Like regular soccer, goals may only be scored by using the feet, head, knee, chest, etc., but not the hands or arms. When a match is five v. five, players must cross the half-court line in order to shoot and score with their feet. However, a player may head the ball in for a goal from anywhere. Accidental own-goals are also good from anywhere.


Off-Sides
There are no off-sides violations in this version of indoor soccer. Players may run, jog, or stand, anywhere they want on the court during a match at all times. This includes “cherry-picking”, or standing behind the defense.
Goalies
Goalies are NOT allowed to use their hands. Goalies are only allowed to use their feet, head, knee, chest, etc., like all the other players. To put the ball back in to play after a dead ball, the goalie should place the ball on the ground and kick or dribble the ball back in to play.
Hand Ball Violations and Fouls
Players, including goalies, are NOT allowed to use their hands. A hand ball violation results in a free kick from spot of the violation. A hand ball violation inside the basketball 3-point arc results in a free kick from outside
the basketball 3-point arc. Defensive players can form a wall approximately ten feet away from the place of the free kick.
The game is meant to be no-contact. Tripping, pushing, grabbing, or excessively physical or overly aggressive play, whether intentional or accidental, are NOT allowed. It is the responsibility of all players to call fouls when they see one. Players who feel that they were fouled can and should call a foul and be awarded a free kick. Other players on both teams, when they think they have witnessed a foul, can and should call a foul and award the fouled player’s team a free kick. Likewise, for the benefit of good sportsmanship, a player who feels that he or she committed a foul against another player can and should admit that he or she committed a foul and turn the ball over to the other team for a free kick.
Other Rules
If the ball that is in play gets stuck behind either net, it is considered a dead ball and play stops. The defensive team is awarded the ball, no matter which team kicked the ball behind the net and caused the dead ball. The goalie kicks or dribbles the ball back in to play. A team can intentionally kick the ball behind its own net to cause a dead ball and stop play.
Similarly, if the ball ends up on the stage (platform) and does not roll back off the stage and back in to play on its own, usually because it is caught in the curtain or behind players’ gear, it is considered a dead ball and play stops. The defensive team is awarded the ball, no matter which team kicked the ball on the stage and caused the dead ball. The goalie kicks or dribbles the ball back in to play.
Often, there are substitute players and/or spectators sitting on the stage. If the ball is played and strikes a substitute player or spectator and bounces back in to play, play continues without interruption. This is not the case, however, if the next touch results in a goal or own-goal or if substitute player or spectator clearly and intentionally redirects the ball. In this case, the ball is considered a dead ball and play stops. The defensive team is awarded the ball and the goalie kicks or dribbles the ball back in to play.
At times, balls are kicked up in to the raised backboard apparatuses. If the ball is played and strikes a raised backboard apparatus and bounces back in to play, play continues without interruption. This is not the case, however, if the next touch is a goal or own-goal. In this case, the ball is considered a dead ball and play stops. The defensive team is awarded the ball and the goalie kicks or dribbles the ball back in to play.
When a player is injured or even just appears to be injured, or when a player receives a ball to the face, play stops immediately. Typically, the ball is awarded to the team of the injured player and a player kicks the ball back in to play.
Obscene or offensive language is not allowed. It is the responsibility of each player to be considerate of others and not use obscene or offensive language. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of all the other players to remind players to not use obscene or offensive language.
Friendly disagreements and accidental fouls are a natural part of the game. However, shouting and fighting are not tolerated. It is the responsibility of each player to show the utmost sportsmanship when playing. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of all the other players to remind players to show the utmost sportsmanship during and after matches.

Sports meeting Thursday!

     This Thursday Sept 10, 7:00 at the Anoka stake center
For the first time YM indoor soccer, 5 players in the court at a time.
For now high school players are allowed to play, but only one on the. Part at a time
Adult coach's may play.
We need to know by Thursday which wards have teams.

Men's volleyball will be discussed and organized Thursday at the same time.

    Although the temperature was in the 90's the nice breeze kept it   comfortable.
 The guys all had a good time.
   Jim Solheim a who's wife is from the Anoka ward has been playing in the tournament for years, and has finished second several times, somehow he eliminated his famous big hook, and the tournament was  in drought and close.
   On the 200 yard par 3 17th into a strong wind Jim put his drive to within 3 feet, then drained the birdie putt.
  so congrats to all who played and a big thanks to bro and Sister Seaman for donating prizes.

     RULE number one!   play fast,  the last  couple four-sums  will be  pushing darkness.
     a)  Play  "ready golf"  if you are ready  go  ahead and shoot, when you start putting,   putt it out,  as the other  guys are lining up their putts,  line yours up at the same time.
    b)  A couple  practice swings are all  you need, if that.

  As  intruduced last year, we again will play  the wildly popular  "Go for it Golf"  which means  we will play by all the golf scoring  rules except NO PENALTIES,  if your  drive goes in the water,  go to the place it entered the water or out of play,  drop your ball  and shoot  but no penalty.  So if your drive  hits the Channel 11 building, you can go to where it went  out drop your ball and you are shooting 2,  or  you can re-tee  but you are shooting 2 (not 3).  If your   ball is lost,  take a minute to find it than drop another,  no penalty, remember rule one  play fast. 

*since I like doing it and I don't want to break my clubs by driving it into the ground, you can tip  your ball  on the grass if you want.

HOWEVER:    NO Gimmies,  and   no Mulligans.  every shot counts, if you arrogantly  try to back hand that putt from 2  inches and miss  that shot counts! 

Team  competiton:  Nine hole competition  on the front nine.
    We will have teams of 4  using the MGBrown  format
Which means   1-2-3-4,1-2-3-4-4
    Each player  plays his own ball and keeps his individual score,  (that score will also count simultaneously  for the individual competition)  But the team score for the first hole will be  the players score with the best score. (best ball),  the second hole your team score will be the top two scores, third  top 3, forth everyone's score,  than start over,  the 9th  hole  everyone's score counts.

You need to keep two  score cards,  one for the team score that we will collect at the turn,  the other  continues on for the back nine  as the individual competition

Individual competition,   Continue on with your scores from the front nine to the back  nine,   We are still using  go for it golf rules for the individual  competition.

Valuable Prizes:  There will be valuable  prizes (all donated)  for:
*   Team  competition winners
*  Individual  champion
*   player with the highest score (worse golfer, highly coveted, it means you have a life)
*   player who loses the most balls (prodigal ball rule)  if it goes out of play and you find it... that is still a "lost ball". so keep track
skills competition:  all on designated  holes  during  your round (all  shots must be on the fairway for Longest drive, or on the green for closest to the pin.)
*2  long drive  contests
* 2  closest to the pin contests
* 2  longest putt contests

*  Finally,   the final one putt one putt only  for  the most valuable prize (seriously valued  at  nearly $50).

* ONE LAST NEW RULE. KNOCK OUT RULE  This will make it possible for even the worse golfers to possibly win.
Any one getting a hole in one (and it has happened  in the church tournament by a Bishops  wife playing her second round ever.)   WINS!
SO when you are done, wait for everyone else to finish, we will calculate winners and hand out prizes than we will have the one final  One putt one putt only contest, with a seriously  valuable prize (valued at nearly $50)

 Good luck,  have fun,   Remember to keep it moving  it gets way dark  at  8:15  so  we gotta be done  with the front 9  by 6:10  or so.

   This year  we want to make our tournament different from the typical, family or work  golf  tournament
we want it to be  the most enjoyable golf you can play, as much as that is possible being... well .... golf
We  will play by "go for it"  golf rules meaning  no penalties, if your drive goes out of bound,  drop a ball where it went out and play on... no penalties (if you are not sure you can make it over the water...  go for it)
     The team competition will be the MGBrown format  meaning  you have your 4  man teams on the first and 5th  hole  you all play  your ball, keep your own score (which will count for both the team and individual tournaments) and for a team score you take the best score.  So if one of your  4 sums  gets a 3  and the others get 4's  your team score for that hole is a 3. 
    The second hole you count the top two scores
    The third hole you count the top three  scores
    The forth hole you count all four scores for the team score
(lets face it with the traditional best ball format  the  scores of the less skilled players  rarely come into play, with the MGBrown format   everyone's scores counts towards the team  score)
We will have  long drive contests,   closest to the pin,  and longest putt competition on select holes  during the round.
    Every one is welcome, spread the word.
