post game basketball nerd stuff
For the basketball nerds. As I was savoring last night's game (Hey I personally have not played in a championship game in 12 years) and pouring over the score sheet, which Becky kept meticulously and neatly, thanks you for that, I observed a couple interesting things.
Rereading my update it seemed like a lot of free throws were shot. Looking at the score sheet, Maple Grove shot 26 free throws!! and what would have been the story of the game only made 15. However looking at Lake Nokomis they shot 32 free throws and made 25 of them. So Lake Nokomis only made 9 field goals with 3 being 3 pointers, Maple Grove made 15 field goals with 3 being 3 pointers.
So in 40 minutes of running time 58 free throws were shot, 41 fouls were called, 20 called on Lake Nokomis, 21 on Maple Grove. (told you it was Physical, but clean) Great job of officiating.
Now for the potential controversy:
Having a great view of the score board from my place at the end of the bench, I know Maple Grove was ahead by 3 on the score board 49-46 as the last second shot by Lake Nokomis was shot, However looking at the official score sheet, it had the final score as 48-46. Had that last second shot gone in..... oh baby would it have counted as a tie or win???? TURN THE BASKETBALL BARRISTERS LOOSE!!!!!
Have a great Summer.

2013 SAMS LDS Men's basketball Champions, MAPLE GROVE
In a great great game, Maple Grove upset undefeated Lake Nokomis 48-45.
The game was hard fought, very intense, very physical, but great sportsmanship in a well officiated game.
Maple Grove lead by 6 at half time, when one of Lake Nokomis's tall players showed up, Lake Nokomis quickly tied it up and for most of the rest of the second half it was back and forth. with 2 minutes to go Lake Nokomis scored to take a 6 point lead. And it felt like they were pulling away. A long pass layup pulled MG to within 4. After trading baskets MG was fouled trailing by 4 with about a minute to go, Shea made his first free throw, than surprisingly made the play of the game when he threw a line drive shot off the rim back to him, passing it around a MG player was fouled in the act of shooting a 3, trailing by three, he made 2 of 3, one point game, Lake Nokomis is fouled . and make one of two free throws. 18 seconds left, MG comes down and again is fouled shooting a three, trailing by 2. They make all three to take a lead by one. Lake Nokomis is setting up for the final shot when a screen sends a MG player flying and is called for a foul. Both free throws are made, Now MG leads by 3 with 3 seconds to go, Lake Nokomis has to go the length of the court and hit a three to tie it. The long pass goes just over the finger tips of two MG defenders Lake Nok. catches the ball, steps back behind the three point line and his shot at the buzzer for the tie misses. MG wins.48-45.
Thanks for the great season.
Remember the Tri stake Golf tournament will be Sat. Aug. 10th. location to be announced.
The volleyball meeting is Thursday Sept 12th, 7:00 at the Anoka Stake Center.
Have a Great Summer.

Results from May 9th, championship preview
At the Anoka stake center, Maple Grove pulled away in the last couple minutes to beat the singles ward.
In the other quarterfinal Bloomington playing with only 4 players rallied to beat St. Paul who 's shooting went cold in the last few minutes.
In the Semi finals Bloomington's fatigue showed as they feel behind by 18 at the half. A fifth player showed up and they rallied to get within 4 with 3 minutes to play but Maple Grove made their free throws and won by 7.
At St. Paul
lake Nokomis beat Twin Cities One (Spanish)
Shingle Creek beat Eden Prairie
lake Nokomis remains undefeated by beating Shingle Creek.
Next Thursday the Championship game will be Maple Grove vs. Lake Nokomis at 7:00 at the Anoka stake center, Derek Chrysler and I flipped a coin to see where we play and then Heads/tails god decided we play at Anoka.
This is the first time in years that the Number one team plays number 2.
In a game they played earlier Lake Nokomis won but two of maple Groves best players we missing and it was a 6 point game with 5 minutes to go , than Lake Nokomis pulled away.
The committee met secretively and agrees that Lake Nokomis is the overwhelming favorite, they have length, speed ,experience and they are undefeated. However if MG is hot and Lake Nokomis falls behind Maple Grove might give them a game.
Thanks again For the great season so far have a great summer, now that it looks like it might actually arrive, remember the golf tournament, and the volleyball season starts with the meeting the second Thursday in Sept.

Tournament Brackets after week one
Here are the brackets of the men's tournament after week one.
The most stunning result was YSAb upsetting #7 Princeton.
Maybe the best game was #11 Shore View taking #6 Bloomington to overtime. with Bloomington prevailing by 3 when a last second 3 by SV. clanked out.
Next week's quarter finals and semi finals take place at Minneapolis and Anoka.
Thanks for everyone who officiated and helped with the books/clock and clean up.

2013 SAMS LDS men's basketball tournament
Hi all,
I love Excel, Someday I will figure out how to get it on the blog without having to take a picture of it, I am sure this is easier to read than my hand written one.
As you can see we have been instructed to reformat the tournament so the lower ranked teams play each other in the first round to hopefully get more competitive games. The tournament is still single elimination.
For the first few rounds the referee assignments are the same, if you
play at 7:00 you need to referee at 8:00
play at 8:00 you need to referee at 7:00 and 9:00
play at 9:00 you need to referee at 10:00
(If players who have byes the first rounds volunteer to referee that would be wonderful.)
Good luck, thanks for the wonderful season.
Remember who we are and act accordingly, I think the sportsmanship with a few exceptions has been wonderful, thank you so much.
